You need them, this handful of people who lift you up in
this dreary, half-dead world. For, without them, you will never be able to be
the “you” that you should have been all along. The people who are your
scrumptious secrets and delectable deviations from whatever-this-thing-is that
we like to define as a “normal” life. And me…well, I never aspire to be ‘normal’.
It’s boring. There is something disingenuous about normalcy that leaves a foul
taste in my mouth. So, without further stalling, I want to introduce you to the
concept of my “five”.
Finding my Five…
I am not entirely sure if I found them, or if they found me.
Then again, I don’t suppose it matters, does it? There are five people in my
life who I talk to on a nearly daily basis. We send one another photos and
memes that inspire us to think of one another that describe them perfectly
throughout the doldrums of each day; things we feel compelled to share with one
another, almost as if the universe is telling us that we need to give them
something at that very moment. Dare I say, there is a little magic involved in
this, because I know that when I get their messages, texts or photos, they come
to me precisely when I need them.
The Written Word Is
My Kryptonite…
A wordsmith, a merchant of words by trade, the written word
is my kryptonite. My “five” know this, and because of this, everything they
send me involves the written word, and it always makes smile. In fact, I’m
going to share something with you right now that you might not know…just about
every meme I post, has come from my five, including and especially the ones I chose today. And you would never guess who they
are; my band of merry misfits. And you don’t’ need to. That is between me and
them. After all, you become like the five people you spend the majority of your
time with; good or bad. My “five” has changed…and thusly, me along with them.
People Come and Go…The
Best…Stay
The point is, most people come and go in your life. The
trick to deciphering which ones stay and which ones need to fall away comes
when you close your eyes and imagine your life 40 years in the future. Do they
belong there? Do they lift you up or do they take advantage of you? Do they
only call you when they need something or will they drop everything when you need
them? Do they take care of you or care more for themselves? Do they know the
dustiest corners of your soul and love you anyway? Who is in your “five”
currently? Who needs to go? Who should stay?
Magnets
Because here is a truth we all need to reacquaint ourselves
with: We are magnets. All of us. We draw people into our lives who are mirror
images of us. If we see selfishness in them, it is because that selfishness
exists in us. If we see a compunction for creation of drama or strife, it is
because we honor that in ourselves. If we see, however, potential, a willingness
and want to move to a better way, we are creating and crafting that in our
souls. For, if you are determined to learn, no one can stop you. No one. Not
even yourself.
So I leave you with this one question: Who are your five and,
more importantly, who SHOULD they
be?
Life is like a game of chess, if you don’t think five steps
ahead, you’ve already lost. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather end this
journey with a checkmate as opposed to a stalemate. As always, the choice is
your own. So, which path will you choose? For not a single one of us can reach a destination if we don't choose a path.
And of course...the song of the day....
