Life doesn't come with instructions. We make it up through our misadventures...

Relationships are only as complicated as people make them. However, when it comes to a digital world where it is so easy to keep connections long past their prime, I got to wondering:

Should you keep your exes on your Facebook?

For me, the answer is simple. It’s a hearty and resounding HELL NO.

Why?

Because even if the breakup was amicable or fraught with fights and ugliness, I think it’s more difficult than we care to admit to ourselves to watch someone we once cared about, or even were in love with at one point, move on, be happy; find someone new.

In fact, I think it’s more damaging to us than what we would like to admit.

Allow me to elaborate.

I have seen women go and look at profiles of old boyfriends who are now married with children almost instantly become fraught with insecurity and feelings of “not being good enough because he didn’t choose them” that it drove them to deactivate their account for several days.

Essentially you are forcing yourself to relive that loss over and over and over again…and, even worse, forcing yourself to feel like you aren’t “good enough” because one person didn’t choose you.

But...Why?

That’s just plain stupid.

It’s like leaving a door open that the Universe has shut for a reason. It’s giving people ways to wiggle back into a space where they no longer belong. It’s allowing you unspoken permission to reach out in a weak moment to communicate with said ex, putting you in a situation where your heart could once again be damaged and broken. It puts your future relationships in jeopardy as jealous exes might just resurface once they see you are now happy and content without them. It causes unnecessary drama.

Because, if we are being honest, some people just can’t deal with that. Because some people have toddler toy syndrome, “I don’t want that toy anymore, but I sure as hell don’t want anyone else playing with that toy, either. So I am going to throw a massive tantrum....just because.”

All in all, keeping exes on your social media is always bad news in my book.

Granted, it’s not as if my dating resume is lengthy. I dated about four guys before I got married when I was 17 and two after my divorce in 2012…and kept the last one. I never slept around, I have only ever been intimate with people who I was either dating or on the verge of dating. I can count all of my “lovers” on a single hand. So maybe my experience is over simplifying a complex scenario. Or, maybe simple is exactly what this scenario needs to be.

Think of it this way, prior to the dawn of social media, once an ex was an ex, you had to make a far larger effort to reconnect with them. Now? You can scroll in your newsfeed and feel that pang, that twinge that….whatever each time they post a photo or change their relationship status. A feeling you probably shouldn’t allow yourself to feel anymore.

Forcing and insisting on keeping open connections that should have long since been shut is akin to living in the past, reliving things long gone and holding you prisoner to what ifs, could have beens and maybes. And, frankly, that isn’t a very happy place to live.

Why put your future at risk because of someone from your past?

So, my question to you is this: Should your exes live on your Facebook or should they be plunged into the pixelated darkness from whence they came once it’s “over”?

When you’re shining bright, you’re happy, glowing, energized, inspired, passionate and expressive.
You feel joy bubbling from deep within you and life is filled with love, fun, and connection. Life is good and you feel amazing, like you can take on the world.
But sometimes that light gets dimmed.
It gets dimmed by outside expectations, less than healthy meals, drama at work, gossip, small talk, too much TV and spending time with people you wouldn’t choose to on your own (because they don’t get you and  you can’t show up fully).
Life is filled with people and moments that dim our light… but what happens when these moments turn to hours, days, weeks and months? Sometimes even years? When you wake up next to someone who’s presence makes you feel so low that you head straight for the candy jar first thing in the morning. Just to feel a little bit of joy.
What happens when you go to work for another day, after many days and weeks and years working a job that stresses you out and doesn’t utilize your skills, let alone your passion? One where the people who surround you everyday are so negative that all you want to do after work is sit in your empty apartment and watch as much TV as possible. Just to feel a little bit alive.
When your light gets dimmed, you begin to shut down, shovel unhealthy foods (drugs? alcohol?) into your body to compensate for the lack of joy and pleasure. You don’t bother with things that light you up because you feel too drained to call your best friend, go to art class or hit up the gym. You just want to shut down.
So what do you do when you feel lost in the darkness of life?

You start to bring the joy and pleasure back into your day-to-day, in any way you can, even though it’s hard.

Start by noting what dims your light.
Is it the people you’re spending time with? Your job or relationship? Maybe your house just doesn’t feel like a home? Make note of what seems to dim your light. Be as specific as possible… the more you understand what drains you, the faster you can shift it!
Prioritize.
What area or person in your life is having the most negative impact for you? This will be anything or anyone that has a direct impact on how you feel in other areas of your life. For example, work may drain you and put you in such a bad mood that your relationships are suffering, you don’t workout anymore, and you’re eating terribly. Anything that has a major impact on other areas is your priority!
You can have more than one priority, but no more than two – three, please! If you try to take on too many areas of your life, you’ll overwhelm yourself.
Create a pleasure list.
Looking at the priority area(s) of your life right now, what brings you joy and pleasure? If your light’s been dimmed for some time now, it may be hard to remember… but try.
Some examples include… calling your mom or best friend, eating a piece of dark chocolate, playing your favorite music (maybe a mini dance party?), wearing your favorite heels, going window or thrift shopping, bubble baths, trying a new recipe, going for a run (or any exercise you ENJOY), reading a good book by candlelight, documentaries, etc.
The point is to choose things that bring you joy and are pleasurable! How can you take the ordinary of your day and make it fun, joyful and filled with pleasure?

Begin to infuse joy and pleasure into your days.

Every. Single. Day. As often as possible.
How can you make the drive to work more joyful and pleasurable? Call your mom or play your favorite tunes? Maybe you need to buy that book you’ve been wanting to read for ages digitally? Fuzzy slippers and some lavender car spray?
What about the work day? Maybe you need to start dressing in a way that makes you feel amazing! Or, could you start taking picnic lunches outside on beautiful days? Hang a picture and bring in some flowers?
What about your relationship? How about taking long walks together after work and just talking? How about using the fine china and candles to make dinner feel more fun and special? When’s the last time you just made out?

Finding ways to bring more joy and pleasure into your life will instantly light you back up.

Sure, I journal. You might journal too. I like to document things. I like to document things (take my TimeHop) for instance, so that I can look back to a year ago and say, “Hey, do you remember what we were doing a year ago today?” – if for no other reason than I enjoy perplexing the man – “We went to a chili cook-off at a food truck stop and I had an éclair cake. I couldn’t finish it, so we got into a 20 minute food fight on the way back home. You covered me in cake, and I got you back at the house. That really was a fun day.”

Now how could you possibly have a bad day after remembering that story?

You can’t.

Good memories are the things that lasting relationships and happiness are made from, you know.
Although technology isn’t always the best place to advertise our “good days”. I mean, I for one, sometimes want to jump through the screen and smack someone upside their little pumpkin head for the simple over use of the following words:

Amazing
Astounding
Outstanding
Wonderful
And blah, blah, blah.

On and on the drudgery goes as pixelated people try to convince us all of their perfect lives.
Yeah.

Right.

Sure your life is perfect.

<please note sarcasm>

To me this happy-go-lucky-farting-rainbows-riding-unicorns sort of “happy” comes off as a bit disingenuous. We all have our bad days, our down days, the days where we want to strangle the cat with a shoelace – calm down, I don’t have a cat….or a potentially murderous shoelace. So having to hear about how wonderful everything is all the time from random folks on the internet is a bit disturbing, when you know that isn’t the truth.

--Not that I am saying everyone should only complain online either, I’m merely pointing out that not everyone can have a great, marshmallow filled fluff ball of a day all the time. --

So, I came up with an idea to document happy memories in a different way -- offline. Instead of having to pour through journal after journal to recollect a happy memory, I decided to make the remembrance of happy memories in our house a little more random.

Enter: The Good Day Jar

It’s a $5.67 canister I saw in Wal-Mart. It’s a little on the Herculean side, but I like it. The idea is simple.

Take one good thing out of every day.

Write it down (with the date) and then fold it up in the jar.

Whenever you are having a less-than-stellar day, visit the jar and start taking out good memories until you put your mind right.

Good memories are one of the most powerful weapons we have in our arsenals to fight off the challenges off bad days. Which is why it is crucial to document as many good days, good things as possible; to slay the dragons of doubt that creep up on us in the dark of the night.

And that is why everyone needs a Good Day Jar – and a Timehop.

Yes, even you.
