Putting the Ass Back in Assumption
By: Shauna Zamarripa
If there is one ugly habit that I try to fight off with a double edged fully lit sword made out of fire and poisoned tips forged out of dragon’s breath and fairy dust it’s that ugly, awful, horrendous habit of assuming things.
For instance:
Assuming someone’s social media status is directed at you.
Assuming you know something about someone because of what you heard.
Assuming you know someone’s character when you have never even had a cup of coffee with them.
Assuming people like you when, in reality, they are little more than self-absorbed asshats who have nothing better to do with their day than talk shit.
I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
Even if someone did you wrong at some point, the largest assumption we can all make is that people will never change. Some will. Some won’t.
But that doesn’t give us the right to poison interactions with other people simply because we want to justify our own bullshit.
And here is the cold, hard truth, boys and girls. You ready?
Often, the reason we hate certain aspects or parts of people is because we are those people, or because we once were those people.
I like to put myself in the latter of the two categories. (But who wouldn’t?)
And I’d like you to join me.
The next time you see a status update you assume to be directed at you, let it go. If the problem was that big, the person crafting said would address it with you directly, and if they are too cowardly to do so, the problem is with them, not you.
The next time you assume something either good or bad about someone based on what you’ve heard on the grapevine….stop. Make your own assessments. That’s what adults do, after all.
The next time you want to assume something (anything) about someone’s character or who they are, make damn sure you know them first.
And, the next time you want to assume you are the most popular kid on the block, and believe that everyone loves you so damn much, remember that people are all flawed creatures….who make deadly habits out of assumptions.
Assumptions are some of the worst seeds you can plant in your mind. If you are going to plant something in your thought garden, let it be made out of light, not pre-conceived notions made out of toxic fertilizer.
Much Love,
Miss Adventures
